Description
Sylimarin is the flavonolignan complex obtained from the seeds of milk thistle, Silybum marianum. It is not a single compound but a group of closely related constituents, of which silybin is normally the principal one, and commercial material is standardised to a declared total content of the complex. It is formulated into liver-support and general wellness supplement products, and into nutraceutical blends. The material is supplied as a yellowish powder of limited water solubility. The standardisation level, the analytical method used to establish it and the extraction solvent all differ between specifications, so these should be confirmed on enquiry.
