Description
HMB is a metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine, and the calcium salt is the form in which it is supplied commercially because it is stable and free-flowing where the free acid is not. It is formulated into sports nutrition and clinical nutrition products, particularly those aimed at muscle maintenance, and features in formulations for older adults as well as athletes. The material is a white powder, soluble in water. It is monohydrate in its usual commercial presentation. Because the calcium contributes to the total weight, the HMB content per kilogram is lower than the product weight suggests and should be allowed for.
