Description
L-leucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid and the one present at the highest proportion in a standard 2 to 1 to 1 BCAA blend. It attracts particular formulation interest because of its role in signalling muscle protein synthesis, which is why it is often added to protein products beyond the level naturally present. It is used individually, in BCAA and EAA blends, and in clinical nutrition formulations aimed at older adults. The material is a white crystalline powder of limited water solubility, which constrains how much can be carried in a ready-to-drink format. It is markedly bitter and normally requires a masking system.
