Description
L-histidine monohydrochloride presents histidine as its hydrochloride salt. The salt is generally more soluble and easier to handle than the free base, which is why it is the more commonly specified form in dry blending and in supplement manufacture. Histidine is an essential amino acid whose imidazole side chain provides buffering capacity near physiological pH, and it is a precursor to carnosine when combined with beta-alanine. The material is a white crystalline powder, freely soluble in water, giving an acidic solution. Where the acidity or the chloride is unwanted — commonly in parenteral nutrition — the free base should be specified instead.
