Description
L-histidine is an essential amino acid carrying an imidazole side chain, which gives it buffering capacity in the physiological pH range and makes it useful where pH stability matters. It is a precursor to histamine and, with beta-alanine, to carnosine. The free base is selected over the hydrochloride where chloride content or acidity would be a problem, particularly in parenteral and clinical nutrition formulations where histidine is a standard component. The material is a white crystalline powder, soluble in water. It is also formulated into amino acid blends and sports nutrition products, and is used as a buffering component in some liquid preparations.
