Description
Betaine hydrochloride is trimethylglycine presented as its hydrochloride salt. The salt form is markedly more acidic in solution than the anhydrous base, and it is this property that leads to its use in digestive supplement formulations. It is also used where an acidifying ingredient is wanted in a dry blend. The material is a crystalline powder, freely soluble in water, and noticeably hygroscopic, so it is normally handled and stored with protection from atmospheric moisture and formulated with that in mind.
