Description
L-arginine base is arginine supplied in its free, unsalted form. It is the biological precursor to nitric acid in the body, which is the reason for its prominence in pre-workout and cardiovascular supplement formulation. Compared with the hydrochloride salt it delivers more arginine per unit weight and produces an alkaline rather than acidic solution, which formulators use to balance pH in blends containing acidic components. The material is a white crystalline powder, freely soluble in water, giving a strongly alkaline solution with a bitter taste. Where the pH effect of the base is unwanted, L-arginine HCl is the usual alternative.
