Description

Betaine anhydrous is the water-free form of trimethylglycine, a compound that occurs naturally in sugar beet, wheat bran and a number of other plant materials. It functions biologically as an osmolyte and as a methyl donor, and it is formulated into sports nutrition, general supplement and animal nutrition products for those reasons. The anhydrous grade is preferred where a formulator wants the highest active content per unit weight and where the absence of water of crystallisation matters to blend stability. It is highly soluble in water and hygroscopic, so blends containing it are normally packed with attention to moisture ingress. It carries a faintly sweet taste.
