Description
Betaine monohydrate is trimethylglycine crystallised with one molecule of water. Compared with the anhydrous grade it is less hygroscopic and generally easier to handle in open plant, which is why some formulators prefer it for dry blending even though the active content per kilogram is lower. Its functional role is the same — it acts as an osmolyte and a methyl donor, and it appears in sports nutrition, general supplement and animal nutrition applications. The material dissolves readily in water. Where a specification is written against active betaine content rather than product weight, the difference between the anhydrous and monohydrate forms needs to be accounted for at the formulation stage.
