Description
L-citrulline is an amino acid that does not appear in protein but participates in the urea cycle, where it is converted to arginine. Because that conversion raises plasma arginine effectively, citrulline is widely formulated into pre-workout and nitric oxide products, often in preference to arginine itself. It occurs naturally in watermelon. The material is a white crystalline powder, freely soluble in water, with a mild and relatively neutral taste that makes it easier to flavour than many amino acids. It is frequently supplied instead as citrulline malate, where it is combined with malic acid; the free form should be specified where the malate is not wanted.
