Description
Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar alcohol of approximately the same sweetness as sucrose, which distinguishes it from most polyols and allows straightforward one-for-one replacement of sugar in a formulation. It has a pronounced cooling effect on dissolution, from a strongly negative heat of solution, which is exploited in mints and chewing gum. It is not fermented by the bacteria associated with dental caries, which is the basis of its extensive use in oral care. It is not fully absorbed and contributes fewer calories than sucrose. Excessive intake has a laxative effect, subject to labelling requirements in some markets, and xylitol is toxic to dogs.
