Description
N-acetyl-L-cysteine, commonly abbreviated NAC, is cysteine carrying an acetyl group on the amino nitrogen. The acetylation makes the molecule considerably more stable against oxidation than free cysteine and improves its handling, which is the main reason it is preferred in supplement formulation. It serves as a precursor to glutathione, and it is formulated into antioxidant, respiratory and general wellness supplement products. The material is a white crystalline powder with a characteristic sulphurous odour, freely soluble in water, giving an acidic solution. Regulatory status for NAC in food supplements differs between markets and should be checked for the intended territory.
