Description
L-tryptophan is an essential aromatic amino acid and the biochemical precursor to serotonin, melatonin and niacin. That pathway is the basis of its formulation into sleep and mood-support supplement products, and it is also used in amino acid blends, clinical nutrition and animal feed, where it is a limiting amino acid in some diets. The material is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder with limited solubility in water. It is sensitive to light and degrades under prolonged heating, particularly in the presence of reducing sugars, so storage away from light and attention to thermal processing are both normal practice.
