Description
DL-tryptophan contains equal proportions of the D- and L-forms of tryptophan, an aromatic amino acid that the body cannot synthesise. The racemic material is used in amino acid blends and in nutritional and feed formulations. Tryptophan is the biochemical precursor to serotonin and niacin, which underlies its interest to supplement formulators, though only the L-form participates in protein synthesis. The material is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder with limited solubility in water. It is sensitive to light and to prolonged heat, so storage away from direct light is normal practice. Where the L-form is required specifically, L-tryptophan should be specified.
