Description

L-methionine is an essential sulphur-containing amino acid and a methyl donor in the body, where it is the precursor to S-adenosylmethionine, cysteine and taurine. Unlike the racemic DL form, which dominates feed use, the L-form is specified where the natural configuration is required — in clinical and parenteral nutrition, in amino acid blends and in human supplement formulation. The material is a white crystalline powder with a characteristic sulphurous odour and moderate solubility in water. It is stable under normal storage conditions. Where cost governs and the racemate is acceptable, DL-methionine is the usual alternative.
