Description
L-cysteine base is cysteine supplied in its free, unsalted form. It is selected over the more common hydrochloride where the acidity or the chloride content of the salt would interfere with a formulation, for example in pH-sensitive nutritional preparations and in some clinical nutrition applications. The free base delivers more cysteine per unit weight than the salt. Like all cysteine presentations it carries a characteristic sulphurous odour, is soluble in water and oxidises on air exposure to form cystine, so containers are normally kept closed and headspace minimised. It is used in amino acid blends, in supplement formulation and in food processing.
