Description
DL-methionine is the racemic form of methionine, a sulphur-containing essential amino acid. It is produced and consumed in large volume as a feed ingredient, particularly in poultry and swine nutrition, where methionine is commonly the first limiting amino acid in the diet and supplementation allows overall crude protein to be reduced. It is also used in amino acid blends and in some food applications. The material is a white crystalline powder with a characteristic sulphurous odour, moderately soluble in water. For applications where the L-form specifically is required, L-methionine should be specified rather than the racemate.
