Description
Methylcobalamin is one of the two coenzyme-active forms of vitamin B12 occurring in the body, and it acts as the cofactor for methionine synthase. It is selected over cyanocobalamin in supplement formulation where a form already in coenzyme configuration is wanted and where the cyanide moiety of cyanocobalamin is unwanted, and it is common in sublingual and premium preparations. The material is a dark red crystalline powder, active at microgram levels, so it is almost always supplied or used as a dilution on a carrier. It is distinctly light-sensitive and degrades on exposure, so light-protective packaging and handling are essential.
