Description
Folic acid is the synthetic, fully oxidised form of vitamin B9, more stable and more consistently absorbed than the naturally occurring folates found in food. It participates in one-carbon metabolism, in DNA synthesis and in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Its best-known application is in flour and cereal fortification, mandatory in many countries, and it is a standard component of prenatal and general multivitamin preparations. The material is a yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder, very sparingly soluble in water at neutral pH and more soluble in alkaline conditions. It is sensitive to light and to acid, so protective storage is normal.
