Description
Hyaluronic acid is a linear glycosaminoglycan built from repeating disaccharide units, found naturally in skin, synovial fluid and connective tissue. Its defining property is its capacity to bind and hold water, which is the basis of its very large use in skin care and its role in joint formulations. Commercial material is produced by bacterial fermentation. Molecular weight is the single most important variable — high molecular weight grades form a film on the skin surface, while lower molecular weight grades behave differently in a formulation, so the grade must be matched to the application. The material is supplied as a white powder.
