Description
Epimedium extract is obtained from plants of the genus Epimedium, used traditionally in Chinese herbal practice. Commercial material is normally standardised to a declared content of icariin, the flavonoid glycoside taken as the principal marker compound for the genus. It is formulated into nutraceutical and herbal supplement blends, in capsules, tablets and powder formats. The material is a brown to yellowish-brown powder. The standardisation level, the plant part used, the extraction solvent and the analytical method all differ between specifications and materially affect the product, so they should be confirmed on enquiry before a formulation is built around it.
