Description
Rutin is a flavonol glycoside formed from quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose, and occurs widely in plants — buckwheat, Sophora japonica flower buds and citrus among them, with Sophora being the usual commercial source. It is classed among the bioflavonoids and is formulated into supplement products, frequently in combination with vitamin C and other citrus bioflavonoids, and it is used as an antioxidant in food applications. The material is a yellow to greenish-yellow powder with low solubility in water, which is a formulation consideration in liquid systems. It is sensitive to light and is normally stored protected from it.
