Description
Shikimic acid is a cyclohexene carboxylic acid occurring naturally in star anise and in a number of other plants, and it is an intermediate in the shikimate pathway by which plants and microorganisms build aromatic amino acids. Commercially it is known principally as a synthesis intermediate, and it is also used in cosmetic and speciality applications. The material is a white to off-white crystalline powder, soluble in water. It is supplied from both plant extraction and fermentation routes, and the route affects cost and availability considerably, so the source and the applicable specification should be confirmed on enquiry.
