Description
Phenylethyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol carrying a soft, sweet rose odour, and it occurs naturally in rose oil and a number of other essential oils. It is one of the most heavily used materials in perfumery, forming the backbone of rose accords and appearing in floral compositions of almost every kind, and it is also used at lower levels in flavour work. Beyond its odour it has mild antimicrobial activity, which leads to its use as a preservative adjunct in some cosmetic systems. The material is a colourless liquid, sparingly soluble in water and freely soluble in alcohol and oils.
